this stuff is amazing. as another reviewer noted it is on the hot side and will do several things very well because of this.
firstly it will dissolve and distribute just about any mica or metal flake from the corner recesses of the jar into your paint and if using to pre thin your lacquers this will greatly aid in remixing it before painting as the particles will come into solution easily with less agitation and tend to stay there unless you over thin. it also dries quickly and will give a fantastic finish with metals, pearls and micas.
another benefit of being hot is that when used with a primer and sprayed properly it will grab the plastic a bit more than standard thinner or leveling thinners will and give you a very good base to sand or paint on directly.
it will fume up any area it is opened into so always use this stuff in your running paint booth center i to carbon or outside (and wear a respirator obviously). mostly isopropanol it will dry pretty fast so will give a more satin coat with regular colors than standard thinners but for metal/mica i find it sprays best in fast passes of extremely thin layers where the flakes will align into very shiny and homogenized coat but if you spray too heavy it will cloud the layers. this is more a function of any metal thinner and not a flaw of this i just wanted to add that tip as it is easy to get metal wrong especially.
i run pretty thin mixes 1:2.5-1:3 and have not found it to attack any of the glossy black lacquers i have used under the metals i’ve used this thinner for (mr hobby, modo 5000 surfacer, modo 234, hobby mio glossy black, al clad glossy black) but it did attack ammo black glossy acrylic and vallejo mecha primer fwiw.
I bought this originally thinking I would use it to thin their gloss black under paint, I should have paid attention. This one excels at thinning metallics. This does NOT thin non-metallic paints it will not give you a clean gloss finish. HOWEVER If you have a metallic paint that clogs up your airbrush, this thinner is for you. Never had major clogging issues after I switched to this for metallics. Just be aware it is a very hot thinner. I usually use Tamiya thinner to strip paint and ran out, tried using this, yeah I stripped it alright. Melted the model piece too. All in all as long as you understand it’s a metallic thinner and a damn good one, you’re fine. Otherwise look at other thinners.
